Freestanding Wine Fridge

EdgeStarCWF40DZ Wine FridgeThe Edgestar CWF340DZ is a freestanding wine refrigerator. This means that it’s designed as a stand alone fixture – kind of like a dining room buffet and hutch combo, or a coffee table. It’s not designed to be sandwiched between a kitchen refrigerator and pantry because it requires plenty of air circulation.

Unlike some models in its class, This one has a built-in security lock. It also boasts dual cooling zones – one for red wine and one for white – which is ideal for a lot of new and intermediate wine fans. It’s also got internal LED lighting and a reversible door.

A reversible door is a huge plus. Why? Because if you don’t pay attention to such detail as the swing of the door – you could be in for a major disappointment with other models that don’t offer this flexible option.

The EdgeStar Wine Fridge allows you to easily reverse the door by changing sides. Even if you’re as inept as me – have no fear. It’s easier than you might think. This allows you to swing the door left or right – depending on what’s more convenient in your chosen location.

It’s easier than you think to reverse the door on the front. All you have to do is change the handle and mount the door on the side you want. Here’s a klutz tip of the day for you: Peel back the rubber on the inside of the door to find the predrilled holes. Use these to screw the handle on in the correct position. Once you’ve got it in place, simply slip the rubber portion back – and you’re done. Easy peasy.

The EdgeStar comes with a one-year parts warranty. That doesn’t matter a whole lot to people who aren’t very handy with tools. We just want the damned thing to do what it’s supposed to do and never break down. But of course, nothing lasts forever and these warranties aren’t much good in the end. What people like you and I are most interested in is finding a good quality wine cooler that will meet our specific needs.

Wine Temperature

Dual Temperature IndicatorThe whole purpose of having a wine cooler or fridge is to keep your wines at the correct temperature. You want them just right for maximum protection of your fine wines and a flavor experience that is everything it’s supposed to be. If you don’t get it right – it can ruin a wine.

But having your wine at the ideal temperature and storage is no guarantee that it’s going to taste perfect. There are other factors like storage during travel to the store and warehousing – before you even got you hands on the bottle. Nobody knows for sure how it’s all going to unfold until you uncork the wine and get that first smell and taste.

Size Does Matter

This freestanding Edgestar wine cooler is a useful appliance for many buyers. It can hold as many as 34 standard size bottles. Where people run into difficulty in storing their wine is when they get into bottles of a slightly different size. This seems to happen no matter how carefully you shop. Manufacturers have started to make adjustments, but most coolers on the market these days are designed principally for the regular, everyday, standard-size bottle.

What People Most Appreciate About The EdgeStar

Customers appreciate that the Edgestar looks classy and elegant with its stainless steel trim door, black casing, and the solid wood fronts on the slide-out wire racking. Add to that some attractive LED lighting and you’ve got an impressive looking wine fridge.

What’s more is that you can use this cooler to store any of your wines – and it does so reliably well. With two separately controlled temperature zones, you can chill your white to a greater degree for optimal enjoyment while at the same time maintain a temperature that’s closer to room temperature for your favorite reds. Proper storage and serving temperatures make a huge difference in results – even though individual preferences may vary somewhat.

If you’ve ever tried messing around with your own mini wine cellar, undoubtedly one of the greatest difficulties you encountered was maintaining that constant temperature. The Edgestar solves that problem by maintaining a temperature range of between 41 to 54°F for the lower zone and a temperature range of 54 to 64°F in the upper zone.

What’s most impressive is its ability to maintain an even cooling. You won’t find hotspots or cooler zones that practically freeze the contents as you might in a standard refrigerator. Powerful air circulation ensures even distribution of the air that’s the right temperature every time.

The LED display control allows you to easily set and monitor your wine fridge. You can pretty well set it and forget it. But it’s a good idea to check your temperature settings occasionally, just to be on the safe side.

The Edgestar CWF340DZ weighs in at about 94 pounds, empty. Loaded to the hilt, it could easily be over 300 pounds, so you won’t want to be moving it around. As for overall dimensions, the Edgestar is 33 1/8 inches high by 19 7/16 inches wide by 23 1/16 inches deep. Just remember to allow plenty of space on all sides to keep your cooler functioning as it should.

You can use this wine fridge as a built-in that’s part o your kitchen cabinets or your bar area. However, it’s important to leave adequate space on all sides and especially the back for proper ventilation. So the typical “built-in” look is not recommended. You need to allow lots of room for the warmer air that’s generated by the motor to vent properly. If you miss this important point – your cooler will burn out sooner than it should.

Shelves are not adjustable in this unit but they are removable. And all of them pull out partially for easier loading. Keep in mind that once you remove a shelf ,you’re losing that storage space. It’s not so easy to pull the shelf out when it’s fully loaded. That’s one of the often heard complaints when you look at some of the other Edgestar wine cooler reviews online. It’s a small problem, but nevertheless, something that could be improved by the manufacturer.

There’s no doubt about it, this is an impressive looking unit and I’m sure that’s one reason for its popularity. Turn the kitchen lights on low, or shut them off entirely and flip on the blue LED light on your new Edgestar – and enjoy it fully – preferably while sipping a glass of your favorite vino.

How Many of Each Bottle/How Do The Dual Zones Work?

EdgeStar Wine Refrigerator Door OpenHow many bottles you can fit in each section of the Edgstar CWF 340DZ? Well, it depends. It depends on the size of the bottles themselves, but as a general rule you should be able to easily fit about 12 bottles of white in that zone and about 18 bottles of red and the other zone. The bottom zone is larger and meant for red wine. I suspect that this design is based on marketplace preference: more wine drinkers seem to favor red wine over white.

Temperature fluctuations are normal. No wine cooler is going to maintain an exact temperature straight through. There’s a high and a low and it stays within that range. When the temperature rises beyond that point, the fan kicks in and cools it down again.

It’s not advised that you use the Edgestar wine cooler in a garage or shed. Doing so may expose your wine to higher temperatures and that’s never a good thing. You also want to maintain a comfortable temperature so that the wine cooler doesn’t have to work as hard.

Edgestar has had some problems in the shipping of their wine coolers. Wine coolers are a delicate appliance and are easily damaged. So when shipping long distances – as is the case with every Edgestar, since they are made overseas, “shipping rash” often occurs. This is not a big issue, as long as you detect it early enough and report it to your seller.

It becomes a major problem when you’re renovating a room and you take delivery of your wine cooler yet don’t uncrate it until the renovations are complete. That’s not when you want to discover a defect that requires sending the fridge back for replacement. If you’re too late – you’re out of luck.

On the upside, it looks like Edgestar has taken action to improve the quality of their packaging materials. This should minimize future complaints.

Who Sells EdgeStar Wine Coolers and Are They Any Good?

One of my pet peeves is reading reviews that are highly negative about a product and yet the complaint has little to do with the product design or functionality itself. It’s a complaint based on something that happened in shipping, or an encounter with a customer service rep who gets to hear it all day long.

My contention is that people want to read about products and how good or bad they are. Shipping problems can occur at any time, with any brand, in virtually any line of products. But it all comes down to the product.
